What a match! In the thus far best game in this World Championship, the so far undefeated Brazilian team met host Austria. The Austrians started well into the game, establishing a 6:3 lead. While Brazil bounces back, Austria wins the first set through attacker Marlene Hieslmair following a sensational defense by Jana Pinsker (11:8).
The match continues to be a tight affair in the second set with both teams evenly matched. With Austria leading 7:6, Brazilian coach Denis Nicoladeli brings Giovanna Lucchin into the game for Bianca Süffert. The Austrian squad stays in the lead, attacker Ines Mayer scores with one of her strong serves and at 10:8 the hosts have two match points of which they score the second (11:9).
Austria is now in the lead by 2:0 sets. The Seleção bounces back and attacker Tatiane Schneider scores the second set ball, winning the set with 11:9.
The spectators witness an exciting fourth set. At 4:3 the Austrian squad brings captain Karin Kempinger for Katharina Lackinger on the field. Both teams’ main attackers – Tatiane Schneider and Ines Mayer – demonstrate their skills with an excellent series of serves. The teams are evenly matched until 14:14. The Brazilians are not able to defend a perfectly played ball by Ines Mayer. The Austrians thus win the match and have qualified for the semi finals.
Teresa Pichler (AUT): Before this game today we analysed the Brazilian team and adjusted our line-up. We found a way to get control of the attacks. Our heads were in the game for the entire match and we played extremely concentrated. Everything worked out great for us and we are just so incredibly happy right now.
Isabella Lucchin (BRA): It was a hard game for us because of the wet field. But we will beat whomever it takes to get into the final and we will win this championship!
