The top match of the first day took place between vice world champion Brazil and Austria. The host team came better out of the starting blocks, pulling ahead in the first set. Ines Mayer and Tatiane Schneider, the main attackers of Austria and Brazil, respectively, showed particular strong performances. Following a service error by Mayer, the Brazilian team took the lead for the first time in the match at 8:7. The Brazilians then kept control and secured an 11:9 set win. The Seleção kept its momentum and pulled ahead in the second set. Tatiane Schneider scored the first match point, securing a 2:0 victory and thus the second win of Brazil in the tournament.
Angela Melo (BRA): Our team-communication was not the best in the first set but we managed to overcome those obstacles rather quickly. We started to concentrate on the match and things started to work out really well for us.
Katharina Lackinger (AUT): It was a great match and we really showed our strength in the first set. It was close and both attackers kept the defense rather busy. In the end the spark was missing and, unfortunately, we lost the game. A loss in the preliminary round is not so bad. If we play against Brazil again, we will beat them.
